Skyline Appeal

Christ Church, Swindon

Welcome to an introduction to Christ Church, the chief landmark of Old Town Swindon since 1851.

The reason for our presence here on the mayor's web pages is due to a cold reality. Christ Church is falling down. This is the stark message facing Swindon, as the town's church on the hill, one of Swindon's most important buildings, confronts its greatest ever challenge.

Across the generations, Christ Church has been a beacon of hope on Swindon's skyline, historically the parish church of Swindon and the base for many in the community. Now, the very building itself - the fabric and structure of the church - needs repairs at great cost. We recently therefore, announced the launch of a campaign to secure its future.

Our aim is to face up to the reality that unless repairs are made, Christ Church as a building, will become unuseable and unsafe. The fact is that, without work, it will disappear. The urgent repairs needed include attention to the spire, roof, walls, masonry, windows and drainage.

We aim to raise over £1.5 million through our appeal - aptly named the 'Skyline Appeal' - in order to restore and preserve Christ Church and expand its work in the town.

The Revd Simon Stevenette says, "The building has helped many over the years, now it's time for the many to help the building, not to create a museum, but to secure and expand the base of our support to the people of Swindon. Put simply, this is about Swindon's future".

So this appeal asks for your help. We seek sponsors, supporters and givers (givers not just of money, but of time and energy, of commitment), who have a shared belief that there is much we can give to our town.

Be inspired. This appeal is about Swindon, for Swindon, by Swindonians. We ask for your support.
