Swindon LSCB Launch Conference - 'Safeguarding Swindon's Children - Together We Can Do It!'

Attracting nearly 200 participants from a wide range of organisations, the Launch Conference of Swindon’s Local Safeguarding Children Board gave many positive messages about the commitment of local professionals to keeping Swindon’s children safe.

A highlight of the day was a series of powerful performances by students from Swindon College illustrating what ‘being safe’ means to them.  With hardly a dry eye in the house, the reality of ‘safeguarding’ was inescapable.

This provided a context for key-note presentations on Respect in Child Protection (Anthony Douglas, Chief Executive, CAFCASS) and Making Safeguarding Everyone’s Responsibility (Colin Green, Divisional Manager Child Protection, DfES).  A ‘carousel’ of shorter presentations provided additional insights into MAPPA, Domestic Violence, Safeguarding in Multi-faith Groups and Advocacy.

All delegates were asked to consider their responsibility to safeguard children and young people and commit to at least one action as a result of the day – a selection of their responses is included below.

"From now on I am going to ensure that . . "

  • I recognise the volume of cry within the child that is silent
  • I remind all staff about child protection issues & procedures
  • I am more understanding of other agencies priorities and limitations
  • I spread the word to colleagues about LSCBS and their purpose’
  • A child’s voice is heard
  • I take a course on Domestic Violence
  • I find out more about different religions
  • I link the work of the LSCB with the healthy schools team
  • All my team are trained to at least CP1
  • I put the child’s voice first
  • I regularly visit the LSCB website to keep updated
  • I continue to listen to young people
  • I follow up the new groups/people I have met today
  • I am more alert to possible dangers surrounding a child
  • I find out more about Advocacy from Barnardos
  • When decision making, I ask myself “what practice will make a positive difference to this child?”
