NSPCC

The NSPCC is represented on the Board by Trish O’Donnell, Area Children Services Manager.

The NSPCC has two services in Swindon but has a national Helpline for people worried about a child and has recently been joined by ChildLine, a confidential service for children and an online advice service There4me

North Swindon Family Centre

The North Swindon Family Centre provides service to children and families in Penhill, Pinehurst and Abbeymeads. The purpose built family centre provides services

  • which improve family life and alleviate the effects of stress on family members
  • prevent children from suffering from significant harm
  • help families to meet their social, emotional, cultural and health needs
  • provide a stimulating and safe environment for children
  • encourage centre users in the activities of the centre and its day to day management.

Referrals to the centre can be in a variety of ways.  Parents and children are encouraged to contact us themselves.  In addition, health visitors, teachers and social workers can also refer.

Services provided by the centre include:

  • drop-ins at the  three locations
  • after school groups for children
  • parenting skills group
  • play courses for parents
  • Keep Safe groups for children 6-10 years
  • play schemes in school holidays
  • individual support for children/parents
  • drop-in for fathers, also individual support for fathers
  • Play Start
  • counselling services to parents
  • volunteer recruitment and support programme which enables service users to become volunteers and contribute to the services.

The NSPCC centre has a service level agreement with the local Sure Start project which funds some of its services. It is also has an agreement with Swindon Borough council, children’s social care, so it can carry out assessments where requested.

NSPCC Swindon Centre

The Swindon Centre opened in 1993 to help children and their families recover from the impact of abuse. It offers a specialist service.

The team works with children who have suffered from all types of abuse  

  • physical
  • sexual
  • emotional
  • neglect
  • those who have experienced domestic violence

The team also works to help children and families counter racial abuse and develop healthy relationships for themselves.

Individual or group work sessions are offered to children and young people aged 3-17 years. Parents can also be supported where there has been family abuse.
